FIREFIGHTER ANSWERS THE CALL FOR HOPE & HONOR,
TAKES ON ULTRAMAN CANADA THIS WEEKEND
Posted July 31, 2014
PENTICTON, BRITISH COLUMBIA - The UltraMan Canada (http://ultramancanada.com/) is designed to bring forth a unique and challenging test for those exceptional athletes who can go beyond human limits of sporting competition. Why take on such a grueling and impossible race? Three years ago Firefighter RICK VAN TUYL (California) sat with his mother, during one of her chemotherapy sessions, and she asked Rick, “What crazy thing are you going to do when you turn 50?” (Rick was 46 at the time). Already, Rick was training for Ironman Arizona. Six months later, 3 months after his mother passed away, Rick found out about UltraMan Canada. As he read the race description, he knew this was the “crazy thing” he was going to do. The race consists of a 6.2 mile swim and 90 mile bike on day 1, a 171 mile bike ride on day 2, and a double marathon (52.4 miles) on day 3. Each day has a 12 hour time limit. When Rick starts the UltraMan race, he will have executed a 3 year plan to achieve this remarkable athletic quest. Although Rick has a passion to race, he also likes to raise money for charities; and, for the past few years, Rick has chosen Code 3 for a Cure. We are grateful and proud of Rick's incredible achievements and efforts for our cause. We ask for your prayers of safety and strength for Rick, as well as for his crew (his Dad, Tom, and his son, Erik) as Rick takes on this ultimate physical challenge. Godspeed, Rick!
Here’s the grueling schedule:
Saturday, August 2, 6:30 a.m. start at Skaha Beach – 6.2 mile Swim, followed by 90 mile Bike
Sunday, August 3, 7:00 a.m. start at Skaha Marina – 171 mile Bike
Monday, August 4, 7:00 a.m. start at Old Princeton/Summerland Hwy. – 52.4 Mile Double Marathon
TO REMEMBER THE ONE WHO INSPIRED THEM,
TEAM C3FAC PLACES 46 OUT OF 500 TEAMS
Posted July 30, 2014
The final tally is in, and Team C3FAC (Code 3 for a Cure), made up of 8 firefighters and 4 citizens, raised a total of $1,880 in their incredible achievement of the Ragnar Relay Chicago, running 200 miles day and night from Madison to Chicago on June 6-7 and landing 46th place out of 500 teams. But even though they are superior athletes (they also did well last year, placing 49th), their love for athletics isn’t the reason they did this race. Three years ago, the team lost their friend, Waukegan, IL Firefighter/Paramedic Kevin Oldham, to pancreatic cancer. He left behind his wife and two little daughters. While Kevin was stricken with his cancer, he toured the country with C3FAC to spread a message of "early detection" to his fellow firefighters. His goal was simple, to use his story to save another life before it was too late. The team dedicated the Relay to Kevin. Our gratitude is owed to each of these incredible athletes, listed below, as well as to Waukegan Firefighters Local 473 for funding the team’s C3FAC shirts and for their tremendous ongoing support of C3FAC.

It isn’t always an easy road for firefighters once they lay down their fire axe and retire. For many, their world is turned upside down as their daily routine goes from jumping on the fire engine in order to save lives to fighting for their own. Ken is a retired firefighter in Florida battling Stage 4 Renal Cell Carcinoma. His wife Cathy bought him a Code 3 for a Cure t-shirt as a surprise and says "he insisted on wearing it to and from the hospital" during his latest round of treatments. Ken goes into the hospital tomorrow to begin another round of treatments. We ask for your positive aura and prayers of support to surround this Warrior couple as they continue to conquer cancer together. Read more about the impact of cancer on firefighters.
A NEW WAY TO HELP OUR CAUSE
Posted July 28, 2014
Here's a new way you can help our cause: Create your own fundraising page for Code 3 for a Cure on Crowdrise by going to this link and clicking on the box that says "Fundraise for your charity." Then choose "Create a fundraising project" and follow the step-by-step instructions. (Do NOT choose the "Create a fundraising event" option, because all fundraising events require prior written approval of the Code 3 for a Cure Foundation.) Similar to Active, which we still also endorse and is mostly used by athletes who fundraise for our cause, Crowdrise requires no payment of fees on your part and the site tracks everything for you. Checks are sent to Code 3 for a Cure by Crowdrise on a regular basis with no further work on your part, beyond initially setting up the page and telling people about it. Thank you for your support!

RACE 11: CHECK
FIREFIGHTER JAKE SINKIEWICZ
DOES IT AGAIN
Posted July 26, 2014
ATHLETIC WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT:
Posted July 25, 2014
Firefighter Jake is one Athletic Warrior who is tough to keep up with. Even though he just started running for Code 3 for a Cure (C3FAC) in January, he has already completed 10 races and raised over $6,100. Race #8 is pictured above right—note the “C-3” hand signs (Jake on right). Jake did Race #7, above left, in full gear, including his SCBA mask. Said Jake pre-race, "Unfortunately, I won't be connected to my air pack, so there won't be any supplied air being provided. Even though it is harder to breathe (and run) with the mask on, I'm sure that it's nothing compared to the everyday struggles that are felt by my fellow brothers and sisters battling cancer."
Jake’s 11th race takes place tomorrow, "Raleigh’s Finest 5k" benefiting the North Carolina Fallen Fire Fighters Foundation and the 200 Club, during the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo. Says Jake, "The run starts at 8am and I would be honored to have you join me and fellow firefighters as we raise money for the brothers and sisters that are fighting to stay alive and for the families of those who have passed." But after his race, Jake will just be getting started. From there, he’ll join fellow firefighter Mike Ward in manning the C3FAC booth that Mike has set up next to his Angel Tool booth at the Expo. FF FRANK SULZER
FINISHES THE BIGGEST LOSER 5K
Posted June 22, 2014
Firefighter Frank Sulzer achieved the Biggest Loser 5k in Erie, PA this morning--with a little help from his friends Ellen and Angelo, who showed true support and dedication to Code 3 and firefighters across the nation who are battling cancer. Big thanks to The Biggest Loser and Dan Evans for the support in giving FF Sulzer the honor he so well deserves of holding the American flag during the National Anthem. Frank Sulzer, you have made us proud.
FF FRANK SULZER TO REPRESENT
AT BIGGEST LOSER 5K
Posted June 21, 2014
Firefighter Frank Sulzer will be running in The Biggest Loser 5k tomorrow in Erie, PA wearing full gear representing Code 3. Says Frank, “Can't wait until tomorrow--I will be on the stage with Dan from the biggest loser show holding the American Flag while Dan sings the National Anthem for the 5k run tomorrow. What an honor for me and Code 3 for a Cure.” We couldn’t agree more. We thank FF Sulzer, Dan, and The Biggest Loser for making this happen. On a side note, as FF Sulzer headed up to Erie, PA earlier today, a car passed him and he observed fire underneath the vehicle. The driver didn’t notice until FF Sulzer got her attention and told her to pull over. As soon as she got out of the car it became fully involved in flames. FF Sulzer got her to safety and closed down I 79 until the fire department showed up 15 minutes later. Great job, Frank!

FIREFIGHTER WARRIOR TAKES RUNNING IN GEAR
A STEP FURTHER
Posted May 30, 2014
Although Firefighter Jake Sinkiewicz (aka "Firefighter Jake") just joined the Code 3 team of Athletic Warriors in January, he has already secured individual and corporate donations totaling over $5,000, and will already be doing his 7th race tomorrow (May 31), beginning at 08:30 (the "Guardians on the Hill 5k" held in Chapel Hill at Southern Community Park, proceeds to benefit the UNC Children's Promise). Says FF Jake, "As always, I will be there to raise awareness and support for firefighters battling cancer alongside fellow firefighters...with a slight twist this race. To show my support I will be running the 5k WHILE WEARING MY SCBA MASK. Unfortunately, I won't be connected to my air pack, so there won't be any supplied air being provided. Even though it is harder to breathe (and run) with the mask on, I’M SURE THAT IT’S NOTHING COMPARED TO THE EVERYDAY STRUGGLES THAT ARE FELT BY MY FELLOW BROTHERS AND SISTERS BATTLING CANCER. I ask and encourage everyone off work that day to come join in the run/walk, be a part or the cheering crowd, or even donate a few dollars if you can…even just $1 for every mile ran. Thank you, and I'll see you Saturday!"
You can show your support for Firefighter Jake's incredible efforts, and for firefighters battling cancer, by donating on his fundraising page. All proceeds go directly to Code 3 for a Cure.
HOW FIREFIGHTERS ACROSS AMERICA
