Illinois Fire Service Institute Studies
Cardiovascular & Carcinogenic Risks of Modern Firefighting

In June 2015, the Illinois Fire Service Institute [in collaboration with the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute (UL FSRI), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Globe Manufacturing Company, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security - Federal Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program] embarked on a study to investigate the effects of modern fire environments on the two leading health issues facing firefighters: cardiovascular events and chemical exposures related to carcinogenic risk. The study’s goals include the development of policies and procedures to minimize those risks to firefighters. An interim report containing preliminary study data was released earlier this year. An abbreviated summary interim report was released as well. According to researchers, the results presented in the interim report are strictly a snapshot of what has been collected. Analysis is currently underway, with a final report and detailed fire service toolkit scheduled to be released in 2017,to include a comprehensive overview of the information available and tactical considerations. The toolkit will be freely available to firefighters and fire officers around the globe. We thank the IFSI and all involved in this comprehensive research project, aimed at protecting the health and safety of all firefighters.

You can stay updated on information being released through:

Go Green for C3FAC

Have you gotten your green on yet? If not, and you're in the Corpus Christi area, we've got your answer. Anyone located in the vicinity of Corpus Christi, TX who is interested in purchasing a shirt (Small thru 2X is $12) can contact John Luis at or Charles Miller at We thank the Corpus Christi Firefighters, especially FFs Luis and Miller, for spearheading this great effort, and would welcome any other firefighters/fire departments to conduct their own shirt drives for the C3FAC cause--any time of the year. Honoring Kevin Oldham

Kevin Oldham, Firefighter/Paramedic with the Waukegan Fire Department in Illinois, first learned he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer in the spring of 2010, at the age of 33. Rather than focusing on his own pain and fears, Kevin chose to focus on helping fellow firefighters. So, in the autumn of that year, he joined the Code 3 for a Cure team, traveling in the C3FAC fire engine on the 2010 Mission of Honor and Hope. Kevin went from fire station to fire station throughout the eastern and southern parts of the U.S., standing before fellow firefighters and sharing his story and what he was experiencing, in the hopes of saving them from cancer. Kevin's message to his fellow firefighters was to heed the body's warning signs, get screened, and wear their personal protective equipment. Kevin went on the C3FAC Mission again in January 2011 to continue helping others, as he had always done. Kevin passed away five years ago today, on March 11, 2011. Kevin exemplified the true meaning of honor and valor, and is forever our brother, friend, and C3FAC team member.
