STUDY EXCERPT SERVES AS A REMINDER
This excerpt from the 2007 IARC Study may state the obvious, but can also serve as a reminder:
"There are several other reasons why firefighters might be reluctant to use respiratory protection. These include the added physiological demands and heat stress placed upon the user, the difficulty in communicating while wearing a mask, and the desire to conserve air. However, several studies have demonstrated that firefighters are not able to visually assess the level of contamination. A study in Boston, USA, found no clear patterns or trends that would allow firefighters to predict the levels of smoke contaminants to which they were exposed (Burgess et al., 1979). In one study, a firefighter who was working without a respirator because he believed that his exposure was insignificant was actually exposed to 27 000 ppm of carbon monoxide (Burgess et al., 1977), 680 times the current ACGIH Treshold Limit Value (TLV, 25 ppm). Results of other studies also suggest that structural firefighters cannot estimate levels of smoke contaminants (Brandt-Rauf et al., 1988, 1989)."
More on IARC and numerous other firefighter cancer studies, including NIOSH, University of Cincinnati, and studies currently underway, can be found on our Studies page.

Eight years ago today, a small team of firefighters set off from Los Angeles Fire Department's Station 27 and drove a fire engine across America and back, performing firefighter remembrance ceremonies in New York, Los Angeles, and other locations to honor and remember those firefighters who had made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives to cancer. Along the way, they visited fire departments all across the country to encourage early cancer screenings and use of protective equipment among firefighters. They called the journey "Code 3 for a Cure—Mission of Honor and Hope Across America." Today, C3FAC is a national nonprofit 501(c)3 public charity which, in part, provides financial help to firefighters who are battling cancer. Happy Anniversary to us, and thanks to all who have supported the cause along the way.

LET'S KEEP A GOOD THING GOING
A little history about PPE, according to Dräger Fire: "Did you know that in the late 1800s and early 1900s, fire service PPE manufacturers didn’t exist? Firefighters donned turnout gear that was either commissioned work completed by tailors and fabric purveyors or street clothes. It was not until after WWII that there were national standards for certifying PPE."
We've come a long way, both in terms of PPE itself, and also proper use and maintenance of same--critical factors in minimizing cancer risk. Let's keep the trend going.

Illinois Fire Service Institute Studies
Cardiovascular & Carcinogenic Risks of Modern Firefighting
In June 2015, the Illinois Fire Service Institute [in collaboration with the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute (UL FSRI), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Globe Manufacturing Company, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security - Federal Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program] embarked on a study to investigate the effects of modern fire environments on the two leading health issues facing firefighters: cardiovascular events and chemical exposures related to carcinogenic risk. The study’s goals include the development of policies and procedures to minimize those risks to firefighters. An interim report containing preliminary study data was released earlier this year. An abbreviated summary interim report was released as well. According to researchers, the results presented in the interim report are strictly a snapshot of what has been collected. Analysis is currently underway, with a final report and detailed fire service toolkit scheduled to be released in 2017,to include a comprehensive overview of the information available and tactical considerations. The toolkit will be freely available to firefighters and fire officers around the globe. We thank the IFSI and all involved in this comprehensive research project, aimed at protecting the health and safety of all firefighters.

Honoring Kevin Oldham
Kevin Oldham, Firefighter/Paramedic with the Waukegan Fire Department in Illinois, first learned he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer in the spring of 2010, at the age of 33. Rather than focusing on his own pain and fears, Kevin chose to focus on helping fellow firefighters. So, in the autumn of that year, he joined the Code 3 for a Cure team, traveling in the C3FAC fire engine on the 2010 Mission of Honor and Hope. Kevin went from fire station to fire station throughout the eastern and southern parts of the U.S., standing before fellow firefighters and sharing his story and what he was experiencing, in the hopes of saving them from cancer. Kevin's message to his fellow firefighters was to heed the body's warning signs, get screened, and wear their personal protective equipment. Kevin went on the C3FAC Mission again in January 2011 to continue helping others, as he had always done. Kevin passed away five years ago today, on March 11, 2011. Kevin exemplified the true meaning of honor and valor, and is forever our brother, friend, and C3FAC team member.
