FIRE WARRIOR,
LATEST RECIPIENT OF FUNDS FROM C3FAC
Posted August 29, 2015

Dave Blank photoDave is a Fire Warrior and the latest recipient of funds from Code 3. He has been serving as a volunteer firefighter in the state of New York for over 27 years, has also been a Chief, and is currently battling cancer. Thank you, Chief, for all you give to others. We pray for your complete recovery.

Giving support such as this would not be possible without our sponsors, athletic warriors, donors, and fundraising events, especially Mo Hawk Less Cancer. We look forward to helping in greater ways as our funding levels increase. Our goal is to be able to, for example, completely sustain a firefighter and his/her family through a difficult time period, or fund a costly medical procedure. With your continued help, we will.

TWO GREAT WAYS YOU CAN
SUPPORT FIREFIGHTERS BATTLING CANCER,
HAPPENING ON APRIL 25
Posted April 16, 2015

If you’re in the Houston area, you can support another great cause on April 25: the FIREFIGHTER HOUSE, being built as a place for firefighters to stay while undergoing cancer treatments in the Houston area. If you buy your general admission ticket for the East End Crawfish Fest pre-sale, (1) you will get a great discount on tickets and (2) You will be contributing to the renovation of the Historic Old Fire station 27 (site of the future Firefighter House)! And don’t forget to participate virtually in the Code 3.1 Fire Run, also happening on April 25. By supporting both events, you’ll be supporting firefighters battling cancer in TWO amazing ways...all on the same day! If you can only participate in one, that's fine too; your support on any level will make a tremendous difference in the war against firefighter cancer.

C3FAC TEAM MEMBER PEGGY ABUNDIZ
REPRESENTS AT 10K
FOR ANTHONY GARCIA FOUNDATION
Posted April 11, 2015

TWO ATHLETIC WARRIORS
TO REPRESENT THIS WEEKEND
Posted April 10, 2015

Two are dedicating their races to C3FAC this weekend: PEGGY ABUNDIZ (Public Affairs Officer, C3FAC) will be representing C3FAC through her participation in a 10k in Brawley, CA for the Anthony Garcia Foundation on Saturday; and JULIE GENNARINO, a Physician’s Assistant, will be achieving the Ironman 70.3 Florida in Haines City, FL on Sunday.

"I've only had 4 weeks to train for this," says Julie, "but in order to fulfill the requirements for the World Championship race in Kona, you have to race one of the Ironman brand triathlons before August…It won't be spectacular, but I'm blessed that I am able bodied enough to even participate. Not only that, but my wings are those of Code 3, so I got the upper hand!"

Julie Gennarino photoJulie began supporting the C3FAC cause through her races last year, and has raised over $1,100. You can check out her fundraising page here.

In addition to representing C3FAC, Julie will be dedicating the race to a very dear friend of many years who is battling cancer. Says Julie, "She is part of the reason I wanted to help Code 3, though she is not a firefighter. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer last year and went through treatment, and just found out that it's spread to her lungs. Any prayers would be appreciated."

Our prayers are definitely being sent for this Cancer Warrior.

The day Julie learned she had been selected to go to Kona, HI, to compete in the Ironman World Championship, she described her triathlon journey: "I've been waiting for this day since I saw an Ironman World Championship on TV! I remember that day vividly: I said to myself ‘that looks insane, I wonder if I could do it?’ And so was born my passion for triathlon. Starting slow in 1992 with sprint tri's, working up to a half and always wondering if a full was possible and always with the goal of Kona. I started concentrating on marathons and finally found the courage to go big. I self coached my first full Ironman and surprising enough I finished. I have finished 7 Ironman distance races, but never the one everybody always asks about: ‘the one in Hawaii?’ Well, my friends, today is the day. I have been selected to race Kona this October. I've been on the verge of tears since I found out through my friend Diane. I am ever so grateful for this opportunity."

FLASHBACK FRIDAY:
C3FAC CREW IS INTRODUCED TO BEAU STANLEY
DURING VISIT WITH WINSTON-SALEM FIREFIGHTERS
Posted March 6, 2015

Newspaper Article photoFlashback Friday: In the very early days of Code 3 for a Cure, during its first Mission of Honor and Hope in 2008, our visit with the Winston-Salem Fire Department in North Carolina took an unexpected turn: we met Jennifer Stanley. Jennifer's 2-year-old son, Beau, had wanted to become a firefighter, but cancer of the adrenal glands would not let that happen. Before Beau died, the Greenville (NC) firefighters had helped make his dream come true. Now, Jennifer was paying it forward by joining the Winston-Salem firefighters in welcoming the C3FAC crew to their station. Jennifer presented us with a photo of Beau and asked that we carry him with us. We still do--on each and every Mission. Read full article in the Winston-Salem Journal.

MO HAWK LESS CANCER BENEFIT
Posted March 5, 2015

Photos of Kevin OldhamYou are invited to attend the 2015 MO HAWK LESS CANCER Benefit for C3FAC on September 12 at the popular Jesse Oaks in Gages Lake, Illinois. Mo Hawk Less Cancer, which raises needed funds for our cause, is held annually in loving memory of Kevin Oldham. Kevin was a Waukegan Firefighter for ten years and was diagnosed in April 2010 with stage IV inoperable pancreatic cancer. Despite his own struggles, twice he traveled with the C3FAC team on our Mission of Honor and Hope to share his story with fellow firefighters throughout the country in the hopes of saving them from cancer. Kevin felt humbled and blessed by the support he and his family received. So, before he died, only a short eleven months after his diagnosis, his wish was to help bless others struggling through illness or tragedy and inspire us all to live with faith and purpose no matter what our circumstance. He believed that through GIVING, you can help change someone’s life. Kevin has certainly done that and more….and continues to do so. Organized by Kevin’s parents, Theresa and Dan Oldham, along with an amazing group of volunteers, MO HAWK LESS CANCER continues to grow in attendance each year. This ever more popular event is a motorcycle ride and incredibly fun after party for riders and non-riders alike. It is family friendly, and there will be food, live entertainment, dancing, a raffle, a silent auction, purple mo-hawks, and more. Come join us! For more info, check out the event page on Facebook.

HOUSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT

PLANS NOW UNDERWAY FOR
FIRST EVER FIREFIGHTER HOUSE
Posted February 27, 2015

Firefighters photoFlashback Friday: In 2009, C3FAC President Lorenzo Abundiz ceremoniously rang the gong at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, marking the end of his treatments for his third battle with cancer, as members of the Houston Fire Department stood by him in support. The Houston Fire Department had opened its doors to Lorenzo, allowing him to stay at Fire Station 33 during his ten weeks of treatments. Lorenzo, who, like many other firefighters, continues to battle cancer, credits the brotherhood he experienced at Station 33 for helping him maintain a positive attitude during his treatments. Plans are now underway to build the first ever Firefighter House in Houston, as old Fire Station 27 is renovated to create a place of serenity where firefighters from all over the United States can stay while undergoing cancer treatments in the Houston area. (Also shown in the photo is Chief Diaz, who is spearheading the Firefighter House project.) All of us at C3FAC wholeheartedly support this worthwhile project. Learn how you can help.

NIOSH COMPLETES PHASE II
OF FIREFIGHTER CANCER STUDY
Posted February 13, 2015

NIOSH Firefighter Cancer Study Phase II imageThe manuscript of Phase II of the NIOSH Firefighter Cancer Study has just been published. You may recall that the findings of Phase I, published in October 2013, suggest firefighters are at a higher risk of cancers of the digestive, respiratory, and urinary systems when compared to the general population, and that there is also a causal relationship between firefighting and malignant mesothelioma. Phase II further examined employment records from the fire departments studied (Chicago, Philadelphia, and San Francisco) to derive information on occupational exposures and to compare cancer risks of higher-exposed fire fighters to lower-exposed fire fighters. We appreciate the dedication and hard work of all the researchers involved in the NIOSH Study, as well as the fire departments who helped them. Read the manuscript detailing Phase II study methodology and findings.

FF FRANK SULZER REPRESENTS AT
TEAM RWB COAST TO COAST RELAY
Posted November 6, 2014

Frank Sulzer photoFirefighter Frank Sulzer represented C3FAC in Team Red White and Blue’s Old Glory Coast to Coast Relay yesterday, carrying the American flag for Team RWB Western PA--despite injury and pain. During the first leg of his run, he twisted his right ankle 2 miles in to his 3 mile portion. He had to stop and let it rest for a bit while other groups ran their leg. But he didn’t stay down long, finishing the last 3 miles of the relay with a sprained ankle—with the extra weight of fire gear to boot. Says Frank, "(I was) in a lot of pain but I finished…"

Frank also says that Team RWB Western PA has been a big supporter of him for what he’s doing for C3FAC and all firefighters. Thank you, Team RWB Western PA! Frank Sulzer, if we looked up the word "dedicated" in the dictionary your name would be there. Thank you for representing, brother!

This was Frank's 13th race already this year for C3FAC, and his next race will be a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day.

Frank initiated a window decal project in honor of his cousin, FF Gerard P. Dewan, and all who lost their lives on 9/11. You can view the page here.

SHOULD YOU GET DIAGNOSED . . .
Posted November 5, 2014

Lorenzo Abundiz photo"If you are ever diagnosed with cancer, remember this: YOU are the General in the fight. Your body becomes the battlefield. The doctors, oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, etc. are your foot soldiers that will provide you with the information necessary to fight the enemy. But ultimately it is YOU who will determine the battle plan. Sometimes there is no wrong or right answer when it comes to cancer. So arm yourself with knowledge, learn as much as you can from your soldiers about the enemy that you are fighting, and choose your weapons wisely as you go into battle. The more knowledge you have about your enemy, the better the odds that you will win the war. Try to get as many medical opinions as possible, do some soul searching, maintain a positive attitude, and hold onto your faith. This will give you confidence in your decisions, which will ultimately affect the lives of you and your family."

Lorenzo Abundiz
3-time cancer survivor and C3FAC President/Founder

FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC KEVIN OLDHAM
CONTINUES TO GO BEYOND THE CALL:
MO-HAWK LESS CANCER BENEFIT 2014
Posted November 3, 2014

Firefighters Holding Check photoOn September 6, 2014, the Annual Mo-Hawk Less Cancer Motorcycle Ride and Jam, in honor and memory of Firefighter/Paramedic Kevin Oldham, took place at Jesse Oaks Restaurant and Bar in Gages Lake, Illinois. The event was a fundraiser for C3FAC, and over $14,000 was raised this year, which will translate into many firefighters across the nation receiving needed financial assistance as they battle cancer. The photo right is offered as a symbol of where a vast majority of the funds will be going. A small portion of the funds will also go to pancreatic cancer research. Watch the symbolic video.

Kevin's parents, Theresa and Dan Oldham, spearhead the event every year, with the help of family members and other hard working volunteers. Words cannot adequately express our gratitude to Theresa and Dan for their tremendous work, as well as the volunteers, the participants, the supporters, and the sponsors, especially Jesse Oaks for their work and generosity in hosting the event. Check out the event album on Facebook here.

Kevin Oldham colllageKevin Oldham (Firefighter/Paramedic, Waukegan Fire Department) was diagnosed in April 2010 with stage IV inoperable pancreatic cancer at the age of 33. He was a loving husband, father of two young girls, son, brother, and loyal friend. He was also an integral part of our firefighter team, answering the call by traveling across the country in the Code 3 fire engine, even though he was struggling himself, to help save a brother or sister firefighter from cancer by sharing his story. Kevin felt humbled and blessed by the support he and his family received. So, before he died, his wish was to help bless others struggling through illness or tragedy and inspire us all to live with faith and purpose no matter what our circumstance. He believed that through GIVING, you can help change someone’s life. Thus, the MO-HAWK LESS CANCER Benefit was born.

THANK YOU, BARSTOW P.D.

LATEST ON THE NIOSH STUDY . . .
AND NEWS ON A STUDY OF NORDIC FIREFIGHTERS
Posted October 14, 2014

In 2013, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), with funding assistance from the U.S. Fire Administration, published the results of a multi-year study on firefighter cancer which examined whether firefighters have a higher risk of cancer and other causes of death due to job exposures. Approximately 30,000 fire fighters from Chicago, Philadelphia, and San Francisco were identified for the study. The findings suggest firefighters are at higher risk of cancers of the digestive, oral, respiratory, and urinary systems when compared to the general population. It is anticipated that Phase II of the NIOSH study, which will compare the health effects among higher-exposed fire fighters to those less exposed, will be published in early 2015. Read more about the NIOSH Study here.

According to Firefighter Cancer Study Newsletter Issue 5 (published in summer 2014), authored by Robert (Doug) Daniels, PhD, Health Scientist and Director of the NIOSH Fire Fighter Cancer Study, "In May of this year, a study of Nordic firefighters published similar findings. The Nordic study examined cancer diagnoses among 16,422 male firefighters from five Nordic countries. As in our study, the Nordic study found moderately increased cancer risk among firefighters compared to the general population. Together, these two studies strengthen evidence of a relation between firefighting exposures and cancer." More information on the Nordic study can be found here.

C3FAC ATHLETIC WARRIOR
JULIE GENNARINO
ACHIEVES IRONMAN CHATTANOOGA
Posted September 29, 2014

Julie Gennarino photoWe salute and thank JULIE GENNARINO, C3FAC Athletic Warrior from Florida, who achieved Ironman Chattanooga yesterday, sporting her C3FAC patch. After swimming 2.4 miles and biking 116, Julie finished the 26.2 mile marathon portion, with still enough energy to carry the C3FAC flag across the finish line! (We will be sharing pics of her finish in the near future). Usually the bike portion of a full distance Ironman is 112 miles; however, due to traffic issues in this particular location, the bike course had to be extended by 4 miles; no problem for Julie. Julie is a Physician Assistant, and she is the newest member of the C3FAC team, having just started in July. But don’t let that date fool you; Julie has already raised close to $1,100 for C3FAC. Later this fall, she will run 3 ultra marathons (~145 miles), and in August 2015 she will compete in her first 100 mile endurance run. Check out her fundraising page for C3FAC. You can also read more about Julie here.

UPDATE ON FIREFIGHTER KEN
Posted September 27, 2014

Firefighter Ken imageSays Cathy, wife of Firefighter Ken from Florida, who is currently in the midst of his second round of treatments, "On November 20 he will have new CAT scans…and we will review and compare the new CAT scans with the ones done on 09/02/14. Those were performed about 4 weeks after he completed Cycle 1 (20 doses) and the doctor told him that his cancer was 80% gone. Renal Cell Carcinoma is not like most other cancers in that there is no radiation or chemo to treat it. IL-2 has been in use for about 20 years and is the only treatment that can result in durable response of ‘No Evidence of Disease.’ Stats show that about 30% of the patients who receive IL-2 will have a ‘response’, of those, most will have a "partial response" - only about 5 - 7% will have a ‘complete response.’ With Ken's first report of an 80% reduction well . . Praying for a complete response after this course. . . . that is durable for another 20 years!"

Please say a prayer for Ken and all the firefighters who are battling cancer.

2014 MO-HAWK LESS CANCER
MOTORCYCLE RIDE & JAM
Posted September 9, 2014

Mo-Hawk Less Cancer 2014 photoThe 2014 "Mo-Hawk Less Cancer" Motorcycle Ride and After-Party, held on September 6, was a great success once again this year. We thank Dan and Theresa Oldham and family for the tremendous work they put in to organizing this honorable fundraiser for C3FAC in loving memory of their son, Kevin Oldham. We are grateful to the many supporters, volunteers, attendees, corporate and individual donors. Huge thanks to the staff at Jesse Oaks for their incredible efforts and support in hosting Mo-Hawk Less Cancer once again this year. We also thank C3FAC Athletic Warrior Frank Sulzer, who kindly provided his support at the event.

"Saturday was truly an amazing beautiful day. We want to thank every single person for their love and support and everyone that helped from passing out flyers to spending this special day with us, even if only for a little while and it was so great to make new friends. You are all amazing special people for helping us keep Kevin’s memory alive. I know he has a smile on his face and is so proud that we are 'paying it forward'. We were glad everyone got to meet baby Kevin as he also is a special little guy. Please mark your calendars for next year, it will be September 12th at Jesse Oaks as they also are now part of our family. Until then we love you and thank you!" Dan, Theresa and Family

CALEB SANCHEZ'S
ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE FOR CODE 3
Posted August 29, 2014

This awesome Ice Bucket Challenge is brought to you by Caleb Sanchez, a high school senior and son of Angel Sanchez, Jr., Chief Operating Officer at Phenix Fire Helmets. Phenix has been extremely supportive of our mission by generously providing fire helmets for fundraising purposes. The latest one (autographed by William Shatner and six San Diego Chargers players) was auctioned at the Fallbrook Firefighters Association Charity Golf Tournament on Wednesday and sold for $802. It is this kind of support that makes it possible for us to continue to provide needed financial assistance to firefighters across the nation who are battling cancer. Like Caleb, you can dedicate your water challenge to Code 3 for a Cure--and in so doing help those who put the wet stuff on the red stuff.

SPECIAL THANK YOU'S FROM FIREFIGHTERS
RESULTING FROM 2013 MO-HAWK LESS CANCER EVENT
Posted August 18, 2014

With less than three weeks to go until the 2014 MO-HAWK LESS CANCER MOTORCYCLE RIDE AND JAM (read more about the event in our Facebook cover photo description), we wanted to share the thank you cards we received from some of the firefighters across the nation who were given financial help from Code 3 for a Cure because of the incredible efforts and work of Theresa and Dan Oldham and family, and all the volunteers, who organized and staffed the 2013 MO-HAWK LESS CANCER event—and all who supported it. We don't "expect" thank you's from firefighters suffering from cancer; they are dealing with enough. But when it does happen, the impact on our hearts is indescribable.

INTRODUCING JULIE GENNARINO,
CODE 3 ATHLETIC WARRIOR
Posted August 16, 2014

Julie Gennarino photoWe are proud to introduce the newest member on the C3FAC team of Athletic Warriors: JULIE GENNARINO. Julie is a Physician Assistant who is also an avid triathlete and ultra distance runner. Julie will be doing the Ironman Chattanooga on September 28, a 50k run in October, a 50 mile run in December, and hopes for a 100 mile running race next August. Since climbing on board just last month, she has already raised more than $700 for Code 3. Says Julie, "I want my efforts to make a difference in someone else's life. It's easy to get caught up in 'it's all about me’ when it comes to crossing a finish line. I've had that selfish pleasure. I've been granted a healthy body and I would like to use it for a grander cause...I'm excited to help the Code 3 cause." Today, she wrote, "Out on a 50 mile ride today and stopped in to thank some local firefighters. I also wanted to thank all my friends and family that donated to Code 3. This was just the start to the day. It was followed by an 11 mile run. Now.....I'M STARVING! Tomorrow I'm racing an Olympic distance triathlon (.9 mile swim/24 mile bike/5.8 mile run) and the 6 week countdown is on for IM Chattanooga." Best of luck tomorrow, Julie, and thank you for all you are doing for Code 3 and firefighters around the country!

Although he just started dedicating his races to C3FAC in January, this was Firefighter Jake’s 11th race already this year for the cause, and he has raised a lot of support towards C3FAC, including securing corporate contributions. But what was different about Race 11 was that this was Jake's first triathlon. Congratulations on this great accomplishment and thank you, brother! We are proud of you and appreciate all you have done for fellow firefighters across the nation who are battling cancer. You can view Jake’s fundraising page here.

RICK VAN TUYL:
MORE THAN AN ULTRAMAN
Posted August 5, 2014

Rick Van Tuyl photoYesterday was Day 3 and the final race of UltraMan Canada, a double marathon (52.4 miles), for Firefighter Rick Van Tuyl. After Day 1, in which he swam 6.2 miles and biked 90, and Day 2, in which he biked another 171 miles, staying well within the required time limits on both days, Rick finished Day 3 and the double marathon race in 12:07, missing the time cutoff of 12:00 by a mere 7 minutes. But to all who know of Rick’s journey and who witnessed what he did out there on the course, he is more than an UltraMan; he is a true Warrior.

Rick's pacer, Brad, describes what he saw: "Yesterday I witnessed Rick Van Tuyl give absolutely everything he had in order to cross the finish line at UltraMan Canada. The strength and determination that Rick showed was truly awe inspiring. Rick was crewed by his father Tom Van Tuyl and son Erik Van Tuyl and their love for him was apparent as they gave him everything they had in order to get him to the finish line."

Says Rick, "Am I disappointed, yes. But, I along with those that were there know that I left it out on the course."

That is far beyond what most people are willing and/or able to give. We salute you, Rick, and we thank you for choosing Code 3 for a Cure as the cause you represent. Thank you for giving hope and inspiration to firefighters across the nation who have their own race to win: the race against cancer.

FIREFIGHTER ANSWERS THE CALL FOR HOPE & HONOR,
TAKES ON ULTRAMAN CANADA THIS WEEKEND
Posted July 31, 2014

Rick Van Tuyl photoPENTICTON, BRITISH COLUMBIA - The UltraMan Canada (http://ultramancanada.com/) is designed to bring forth a unique and challenging test for those exceptional athletes who can go beyond human limits of sporting competition. Why take on such a grueling and impossible race? Three years ago Firefighter RICK VAN TUYL (California) sat with his mother, during one of her chemotherapy sessions, and she asked Rick, “What crazy thing are you going to do when you turn 50?” (Rick was 46 at the time). Already, Rick was training for Ironman Arizona. Six months later, 3 months after his mother passed away, Rick found out about UltraMan Canada. As he read the race description, he knew this was the “crazy thing” he was going to do. The race consists of a 6.2 mile swim and 90 mile bike on day 1, a 171 mile bike ride on day 2, and a double marathon (52.4 miles) on day 3. Each day has a 12 hour time limit. When Rick starts the UltraMan race, he will have executed a 3 year plan to achieve this remarkable athletic quest. Although Rick has a passion to race, he also likes to raise money for charities; and, for the past few years, Rick has chosen Code 3 for a Cure. We are grateful and proud of Rick's incredible achievements and efforts for our cause. We ask for your prayers of safety and strength for Rick, as well as for his crew (his Dad, Tom, and his son, Erik) as Rick takes on this ultimate physical challenge. Godspeed, Rick!

Here’s the grueling schedule:

Saturday, August 2, 6:30 a.m. start at Skaha Beach – 6.2 mile Swim, followed by 90 mile Bike
Sunday, August 3, 7:00 a.m. start at Skaha Marina – 171 mile Bike
Monday, August 4, 7:00 a.m. start at Old Princeton/Summerland Hwy. – 52.4 Mile Double Marathon

TO REMEMBER THE ONE WHO INSPIRED THEM,
TEAM C3FAC PLACES 46 OUT OF 500 TEAMS
Posted July 30, 2014

Team C3FAC photoThe final tally is in, and Team C3FAC (Code 3 for a Cure), made up of 8 firefighters and 4 citizens, raised a total of $1,880 in their incredible achievement of the Ragnar Relay Chicago, running 200 miles day and night from Madison to Chicago on June 6-7 and landing 46th place out of 500 teams. But even though they are superior athletes (they also did well last year, placing 49th), their love for athletics isn’t the reason they did this race. Three years ago, the team lost their friend, Waukegan, IL Firefighter/Paramedic Kevin Oldham, to pancreatic cancer. He left behind his wife and two little daughters. While Kevin was stricken with his cancer, he toured the country with C3FAC to spread a message of "early detection" to his fellow firefighters. His goal was simple, to use his story to save another life before it was too late. The team dedicated the Relay to Kevin. Our gratitude is owed to each of these incredible athletes, listed below, as well as to Waukegan Firefighters Local 473 for funding the team’s C3FAC shirts and for their tremendous ongoing support of C3FAC.

CANCER WARRIOR
Posted July 29, 2014

Ken photoIt isn’t always an easy road for firefighters once they lay down their fire axe and retire. For many, their world is turned upside down as their daily routine goes from jumping on the fire engine in order to save lives to fighting for their own. Ken is a retired firefighter in Florida battling Stage 4 Renal Cell Carcinoma. His wife Cathy bought him a Code 3 for a Cure t-shirt as a surprise and says "he insisted on wearing it to and from the hospital" during his latest round of treatments. Ken goes into the hospital tomorrow to begin another round of treatments. We ask for your positive aura and prayers of support to surround this Warrior couple as they continue to conquer cancer together. Read more about the impact of cancer on firefighters.

A NEW WAY TO HELP OUR CAUSE
Posted July 28, 2014

Here's a new way you can help our cause: Create your own fundraising page for Code 3 for a Cure on Crowdrise by going to this link and clicking on the box that says "Fundraise for your charity." Then choose "Create a fundraising project" and follow the step-by-step instructions. (Do NOT choose the "Create a fundraising event" option, because all fundraising events require prior written approval of the Code 3 for a Cure Foundation.) Similar to Active, which we still also endorse and is mostly used by athletes who fundraise for our cause, Crowdrise requires no payment of fees on your part and the site tracks everything for you. Checks are sent to Code 3 for a Cure by Crowdrise on a regular basis with no further work on your part, beyond initially setting up the page and telling people about it. Thank you for your support!

Jake Sinkiewicz photosFirefighter Jake is one Athletic Warrior who is tough to keep up with. Even though he just started running for Code 3 for a Cure (C3FAC) in January, he has already completed 10 races and raised over $6,100. Race #8 is pictured above right—note the “C-3” hand signs (Jake on right). Jake did Race #7, above left, in full gear, including his SCBA mask. Said Jake pre-race, "Unfortunately, I won't be connected to my air pack, so there won't be any supplied air being provided. Even though it is harder to breathe (and run) with the mask on, I'm sure that it's nothing compared to the everyday struggles that are felt by my fellow brothers and sisters battling cancer."

Jake’s 11th race takes place tomorrow, "Raleigh’s Finest 5k" benefiting the North Carolina Fallen Fire Fighters Foundation and the 200 Club, during the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo. Says Jake, "The run starts at 8am and I would be honored to have you join me and fellow firefighters as we raise money for the brothers and sisters that are fighting to stay alive and for the families of those who have passed." But after his race, Jake will just be getting started. From there, he’ll join fellow firefighter Mike Ward in manning the C3FAC booth that Mike has set up next to his Angel Tool booth at the Expo. On a side note, as FF Sulzer headed up to Erie, PA earlier today, a car passed him and he observed fire underneath the vehicle. The driver didn’t notice until FF Sulzer got her attention and told her to pull over. As soon as she got out of the car it became fully involved in flames. FIREFIGHTER WARRIOR TAKES RUNNING IN GEAR
A STEP FURTHER
Posted May 30, 2014

Jake Sinkiewicz imageAlthough Firefighter Jake Sinkiewicz (aka "Firefighter Jake") just joined the Code 3 team of Athletic Warriors in January, he has already secured individual and corporate donations totaling over $5,000, and will already be doing his 7th race tomorrow (May 31), beginning at 08:30 (the "Guardians on the Hill 5k" held in Chapel Hill at Southern Community Park, proceeds to benefit the UNC Children's Promise). Says FF Jake, "As always, I will be there to raise awareness and support for firefighters battling cancer alongside fellow firefighters...with a slight twist this race. To show my support I will be running the 5k WHILE WEARING MY SCBA MASK. Unfortunately, I won't be connected to my air pack, so there won't be any supplied air being provided. Even though it is harder to breathe (and run) with the mask on, I’M SURE THAT IT’S NOTHING COMPARED TO THE EVERYDAY STRUGGLES THAT ARE FELT BY MY FELLOW BROTHERS AND SISTERS BATTLING CANCER. I ask and encourage everyone off work that day to come join in the run/walk, be a part or the cheering crowd, or even donate a few dollars if you can…even just $1 for every mile ran. Thank you, and I'll see you Saturday!"

You can show your support for Firefighter Jake's incredible efforts, and for firefighters battling cancer, by donating on his fundraising page. All proceeds go directly to Code 3 for a Cure.

HOW FIREFIGHTERS ACROSS AMERICA
CAN HELP CODE 3 INSTANTLY REACH ITS GOAL
Posted May 29, 2014

In this unique and creative take on the Cold Water Challenge, Firefighter Jeff Carter, with comrade Ed Doyle, calls upon firefighters across the nation to support Code 3. If what he is suggesting actually happened, in an instant we would well exceed our target income goal. Read more about what we have already achieved and what we would be able to accomplish if firefighters across the country responded to this challenge.

"TEAM CODE 3" TO REPRESENT
AT RAGNAR RELAY CHICAGO
IN HONOR OF KEVIN OLDHAM
Posted April 15, 2014

Kevin Oldham photoWe are honored to announce that a team of 12 elite athletes will run the 2014 Ragnar Relay Chicago June 6-7, covering 200 miles from Madison, WI to Chicago, IL, to honor their brother, Kevin Oldham (Waukegan F.D., IL), and to represent our cause. “Team Code 3” is comprised of 7 firefighters from Waukegan, 1 firefighter from Grayslake, and 4 other great athletes. Says team member Ryan Koncki, “Three years ago we lost our friend, Kevin Oldham, to pancreatic cancer. He left behind a wife and two precious girls. While Kevin was stricken with his cancer, he toured the country with Code 3 for a Cure to spread a message of ‘early detection’ to his fellow firefighters. His goal was simple, to use his story to save another life before it was too late. Kevin was a great man, husband, father, son, brother, friend. We honor his memory by dedicating these 200 miles of ground pounding to him and his cause! Help us carry on Kevin's memory and mission of helping other firefighters with cancer!” You can support Team Code 3 through their event page.

It was a windy day but a pretty course near the lake. I came in at 26:10 in my new TECGEN XTREME gear. The Tecgen is great, it's breathable, soft and lightweight. Thank you Code 3 for a Cure Foundation, TECGEN, Vitalyte, Honey Stinger & Road ID for keeping me safe, supported, comfortable and fueled while I'm out there running to fight cancer and support firefighters in need. FIREFIGHTER CIELO ACOSTA AND
PEGGY ABUNDIZ REPRESENT IN TWO STATES
Posted April 12, 2014

Cielo Acosta and Peggy Abundiz photoProud of Code 3 Warrior, Firefighter Cielo Acosta, who achieved his THIRD race in three weeks for Code 3 today, finishing the “Not Too Taxing” 5k in Soap Lake, Washington – in an incredible 26:10! This was after achieving a 10k two weeks ago and a MARATHON last weekend. That’s why we call him "Super Cielo." Way to go, brother!

Meanwhile, our Cofounder, Peggy Abundiz, represented at her second race in two weekends, a 10k fundraiser for the Anthony Garcia Foundation in Brawley, California, finishing in 1:33:15, after achieving a 5k last weekend. Great job, Peggy! Watch video of Peggy's run here.

TWO WARRIORS
TO REPRESENT THIS SATURDAY
Posted April 10, 2014

Cielo Acosta and Peggy Abundiz photoWe have two Warriors representing this Saturday, both in firefighter gear: Firefighter CIELO ACOSTA--or "Super Cielo" as we like to call him--will achieve his THIRD race in a row (he did a marathon last weekend and a 10k the weekend before that) at the "Not Too Taxing" 5k in Soap Lake, WA.

Code 3 Cofounder PEGGY ABUNDIZ will achieve her 2nd race in a row; her first was a 5k last weekend. Her second race is a 10k fundraiser for the Anthony Garcia Foundation in Brawley, CA. Says Peggy, "I am wearing the firefighting gear as a representative of my husband Lorenzo. He has always been an athlete, but his cancer battles, caused by his firefighting duties, have made him unable to compete in events like this. Cielo, myself and the other firefighter athletes like Cielo who compete for Code 3 wear the gear to symbolize that, although firefighters wear protective equipment, it’s not always enough to protect them from the toxic and hazardous environments that cause cancer."

REAL WARRIORS
FOR HOPE & HONOR
Posted ApAthletic Warriors photoril 5, 2014

Congratulations to three of our amazing athletic Warriors, who didn't just finish their races today: (1) FF CIELO ACOSTA, in his second of a “trifecta” (racing three weekends in a row), achieved the Yakima River Canyon Marathon (Ellensburg, Washington) in his turnout gear—in 5:40, his fastest marathon ever—all while fighting the flu! This was a special one for Cielo not only because of his record time, but also because last year, in this very same race, he ran for the first time in gear. (2) FF ALEX MURRAY achieved the Cooper River Bridge Run 10k (Charleston, South Carolina) in his firefighting gear—in 1:15!! This included a 4.1% grade over the Cooper River Bridge. A great run--also because he was joined afterwards at the Code 3 booth by cancer conqueror and fellow Firefighter Jordan Eaddy. (3) Our Cofounder, PEGGY ABUNDIZ, finished her first race, the Code 3.1 Fire Run 5k (Brawley, California), in 34 minutes. Watch video of the Code 3.1 Fire Run here. Way to go, Warriors! Together. For hope. For honor. For firefighters across the nation who are battling cancer.

Use your imagination and show your support to those fighting cancer. Send to: firefighters@code3foracure.org. Deadline is Tuesday, April 22. Three winners will be selected and each will receive a C3FAC t-shirt along with a sweet surprise! WHY HUG A TREE? Says Code 3 President/Founder Lorenzo Abundiz, "I hug trees because I feel their power and peace. When I was going through my cancer battles, I hugged trees all the time, and I felt the healing power of nature flow through my sick body. As I hugged the tree, I would gaze up through the branches and see the beautiful blue sky and felt total peace. A tree to me symbolizes life, beauty, strength, and peace."

FIREFIGHTER JAKE REPRESENTS
AT THE "CURE AHC" 5K
Posted April 1, 2014

Jake Sinkiewicz photoWe are very proud of Firefighter/Warrior Jake Sinkiewicz, who represented us at the "Cure AHC" 5k in Rolesville, NC this past Saturday. This was Jake's second weekend in a row of competing, and his fourth race already this year representing Code 3. AHC stands for Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood. Check out the website for this great cause at http://cureahc.org/. A quote from Firefighter Jake: "Imagine this... It's a cold morning, you're exhausted from a long 24 hour shift, you're putting on an extra 45 pounds, and you're standing in the pouring rain. Sounds like a bad day already right? Wrong, because a group of smiling kids approach you, and all of a sudden you realize that you get to be part of something MUCH larger than yourself. Last Saturday, I had the honor of showing my support for a group of brave kids that serve as my heroes. The Cure AHC Foundation (http://cureahc.org/) hosted a great 5k run to raise money to find a cure for this terrible disease. If you're not familiar with Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood, take a second to educate yourself (it's worth it). Thank you Jeff for a great event, I look forward to participating again next year." We also thank Jason Pino for the fantastic photo of his lovely daughters posing with Firefighter Jake--and Cure AHC for your important work in fighting this childhood disease.

KATRINA SILVIA:
ONCE AGAIN, A CHAMPION FOR THE CAUSE

Katrina Silvia photoWe are so proud of our National Ambassador, Firefighter Katrina Silvia, who conquered another race today in firefighter gear, including air tank and helmet, at the Gate River Run in Jacksonville, FL, the largest 15k race in the United States. Katrina fondly refers to the Gate as her "Where It All Started" run, as eight years ago she and a friend decided, the night before, to do the race, her first time competing, and surprisingly even to herself at that time, she was able to run all 9 miles of it. Katrina has done the Gate River Run, among others races, every year since. Joining Katrina today were fellow firefighters as well as her son Austin and another young athlete, Nicholas, the son of Scott, one of the Firefighter Warriors who ran with her. Way to go, team!

PRAYER REQUEST
FOR OUR HEROES
Posted March 2, 2014

Louis, a firefighter in Hawaii, is battling acute myeloid leukemia, and will be undergoing a bone marrow transplant in Seattle, thanks to his brother, who was found to be a match. Even amidst their struggles, the family sent a beautiful thank you to Code 3 for the assistance they received, which we sent on to the Oldham family, whose event, Mo-Hawk Less Cancer, raised the funds necessary for us to give financial assistance to Louis and several other firefighters battling cancer. We thank all of you for your ongoing donations and support, which will allow us to continue helping heroes like Louis. We ask for prayers for Louis and all those firefighters, and their families, who are being impacted by cancer. Read more about cancer's effect on firefighters.

We are thankful to report that they have both overcome and are well on their road to recovery. Now, "Running for our Brothers/Sisters" (a.k.a. C3FAC-RFOBS) competes in various races representing Code 3 in order to support other firefighters across the country who are battling cancer. Follow C3FAC-RFOBS on Twitter.

FF CIELO ACOSTA
HELPS MAKE IT A SIGNATURE WEEKEND
FOR CODE 3
Posted February 24, 2014

Cielo Acosta photoThis just in: Firefighter Cielo Acosta, in his true Warrior style, has achieved yet another run. Says Cielo, "(Yesterday) morning I ran a 10k in turnout gear and boots. @virtualrunworld.com I did their 'Believe in Yourself' run where runners set their own goals. I wanted to challenge myself to run in boots, not easy but not as hard as I expected. I have some upcoming events to do in boots so this was my first try running in them. A friend once said to me, "I believe I can do anything", her conviction impressed me. Over the years I've strived to internalize that belief myself. Each goal I achieve fuels my desire to continue to push the boundaries of what I believe is possible for myself. I ran today to support Code 3 for a Cure Foundation work to help firefighters battling cancer. Please consider a donation large or small every dollar helps." You can donate on Cielo's fundraising page here. Every donation goes to Code 3. Way to inspire, Cielo!

Cielo Acosta's run makes this past weekend a signature one for Code 3, with THREE Warriors having competed for the cause in three different states (Washington, Florida, and North Carolina). Thank you, Cielo Acosta, Katrina Silvia, and Jake Sinkiewicz!

Katrina Silvia and Family photoOnce again, our National Ambassador, Katrina Silvia, had a magnificent race, achieving the half marathon of the 26.2 with Donna in 3:17. Only this time, it was a family affair, as her father-in-law Wayne and mother-in-law Shellie (a cancer survivor) finished alongside her, with her husband Ryan in support. Way to go, Warriors of hope! You can read more about Katrina here.

FF KATRINA SILVIA SET
TO ACHIEVE 13.1 IN GEAR
Posted February 22, 2014

Katrina Silvia photoSending positive thoughts and energy to our amazing National Ambassador, FF Katrina Silvia, who will achieve 13.1 miles in her firefighting gear representing Code 3 tomorrow at the 26.2 with Donna race in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Says Katrina, whose workout last Tuesday included dragging a tire for the last mile (see photo left), "Join me in my mission of honor and hope and become a hero today by helping one. I'm doing the Donna race tomorrow and am asking if you could give 3 to Code 3 for a Cure Foundation. Your money will go directly to assisting a hero battling cancer that has a financial hardship. Any donation is appreciated. If we all do a little we can move mountains!" You can donate here. By Katrina’s side will be another incredible woman, Shellie, a cancer survivor and a true Warrior in her own right. Good luck, ladies!

A GREAT MEETING

It was nice spending some time with such a great couple. We are thankful for Jamie's involvement with Code 3 through his athletic achievements, and his genuine desire to help others. It is efforts such as Jamie's that bring attention to the cause and raise funds needed so that we can continue to provide financial assistance to firefighters in need who are battling cancer. Thank You card photoHappy Valentine's Day to all! We thought it very fitting on this day to share this loving gift we received a while back from a firefighter in Hawaii. We will be sending it on to the very deserving Oldham family, whose event Mo-Hawk Less Cancer, in honor of Firefighter Kevin Oldham, raised the funds necessary to help this hero and many others. Thank you, Theresa and Dan Oldham and family!

ANOTHER FIREFIGHTER
VICTORIOUS OVER CANCER
Posted January 27, 2014

More good news, out of South Carolina: a 22-year old firefighter who has been in the hospital for the past 10 months fighting a very tough battle with cancer is going home today. We pass along his thanks to all who have been praying for him throughout this ordeal.

AWESOME VICTORY
FOR A FIREFIGHTER
Posted January 22, 2014

We are so thankful to share the awesome news that Tim, a firefighter from Texas who has been fighting a tough battle for a long time, and has endured very intense chemotherapy, was today declared cancer free. Congratulations, Tim! You have overcome, brother! We continue to pray for all those still fighting cancer and other serious illnesses caused by their firefighting career.

ALAN PETELINSEK OF POWER TEST:
KEEP INSPIRING
Posted January 22, 2014

Alan Petelinsek photoWe just had to share another photo of Alan Petelinsek, Owner of Power Test, Inc., a great supporter of Code 3. Alan worked out in -2 degree temperatures yesterday in his home state of Wisconsin. Being based in California, what really fascinated us about this pic is that what we thought was snow on his facial hair is actually the moisture from his breath frozen on his face. Says Alan, "Running, like life, can be a grateful celebration of your health or a miserable trudge. It's all a matter of attitude." Keep inspiring!

ATHLETIC WARRIOR JAKE SINKIEWICZ
Posted January 19, 2014

Jake Sinkiewicz photoFirefighter/Paramedic Jake Sinkiewicz (North Carolina) represented on January 18 by achieving the Little River Trail Runs 7k--in 28 degree weather! This is Jake's first race of the year, and his goal is to complete a variety of races--12 to 14 in all--in 2014. Jake is racing to bring attention to our cause to help firefighters battling cancer. He is also racing to raise awareness about firefighter heart health. Firefighters who race in gear for Code 3 do so to call attention to the fact that, even though firefighters wear their protective gear, it's not always enough to protect them from the toxins which cause cancer. Thank you, Jake. Great job, brother! You can look up Jake via Facebook at Firefighter Jake.

You can watch a great interview of Jake by Kevin Jackson of TEN at TEN here.

MELISSA'S BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER
A HUGE SUCCESS

We salute and thank Melissa for her incredible efforts in helping us continue to operate and issue funds to firefighters in need who are battling cancer. We also want to thank Melissa's parents, Christie and Rob, for their incredible support (and Rob for his continued service as a firefighter), as well as Applebee's Charles Town, all involved in making the breakfast such a great success, and all the donors who contributed so generously. Thank you.

CODE 3'S NEWEST (AND YOUNGEST)
WARRIOR

Melissa photoRemember Melissa? She's the remarkable young lady we told you about back in November. Every year for the past five years for her birthday, Melissa has conducted fundraising campaigns for charitable causes, and she has won awards for her philanthropic efforts. For her 14th birthday, which was in November, Melissa chose Code 3 for a Cure as the beneficiary of choice. Melissa (pictured below) has extended her fundraising campaign and is working on organizing a special event to benefit Code 3 in the near future. Says Melissa, "My dad is a firefighter for 23 years. I know these men & women run in when others run away. I want to let my Dad's fire brothers know that their sacrifice is known, appreciated, & did not go unnoticed." Thank you, Melissa!

GRATITUDE AS ANOTHER YEAR
COMES TO A CLOSE
Posted December 31, 2013

As we close out 2013, we have much to be thankful for--all the generous individual donors, hard working athletes and families who have raised funds for the cause, and organizations who have contributed, making it possible for us to give financial assistance to firefighters battling cancer. On behalf of our Board of Directors and our entire team, THANK YOU. We look forward to being able to help in increasingly greater ways in 2014.
